Women Center Stage

Thursday, March 20, 7 p.m.

Once barred from the stage because it was seen to be “dangerous” and “immoral,” women have struggled to find their place in the spotlight for centuries. Chronic underrepresentation, sexual harassment, and the loss of roles after a certain age is still an issue for women in the face of the performing arts today.

CWHF Inductee Sophie Tucker faced discrimination due to her weight and Katherine Hepburn struggled to take roles that defied stereotypes. Marian Anderson became a reluctant icon of the Civil Rights movement simply for doing what she was trained and loved to sing before an audience. Help us put the spotlight on the Connecticut women who found a voice for change in the performing arts.

Cosponsored by Orange Community Women and Case Memorial Library as part of the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame “Talks on the Road” series.

Give Me Your Hand: A Celtic Music Celebration

Saturday, March 29, 2 p.m.

Entwyned will perform and describe the joyous, wistful, and rollicking music of the Celtic nations from Bunting and other historic sources, adapted to our instruments: Celtic harp, lutes, historic guitars, mandolin, Baroque flutes, and Viola da Gamba.

For centuries music played a central role in the cultures of Ireland and Scotland. And for centuries there were attempts to eradicate their music and instruments. Our program will highlight delightful selections from the Edward Bunting Collections, first published in 1796. Bunting traveled throughout Ireland to capture in written form traditional Irish music before it was forever lost.

Registration is required and opens on March 8 at 2:00 p.m.

Ban This Book Club: The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank

Monday, March 24, 7 p.m.

The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank is banned in Florida and has been banned in several schools in the United States over the years - mostly in regard to passages that were considered “sexually offensive,” as well as for the tragic nature of the book, which some felt might be “depressing” for young readers. The diary has now been published in more than 70 different languages and is deemed one of the most powerful books of the 20th century, with more than 30 million copies sold in sixty countries.

Join us as we discuss this as a work of literature as well as an object of censorship.

Copies are available at the Circulation Desk. Registration is required. Register here.
