Letter: UELP is A Great Program for Seniors
I would like to make the town residents aware of a great program for Seniors at the Amity Regional High School called the Unpaid Experiential Learning Program (UELP). It is run by Lyn Cocco, College & Career Counselor, SAILS Program Counselor at Amity. This is a two-week internship program to give Senior’s experience in a real-world career area. This year the Orange Tax Office hosted a delightfully well-qualified Senior, Sana Quadri, from Orange. She was well prepared and is a sterling example of the quality of workers Amity can produce.
As a mentor in the program, I prepared a sampling of the various things that we do in the tax office and gave her several tasks to accomplish which she did extremely well. Some of our Orange Residents may have seen her at the office or heard her on the telephone. This program is one which I am sure helps Amity students get a picture of various career fields and a taste of what goes on in the workplace environment.
I would recommend the program to other mentors and businesses that would like to mentor a student and get them off to a good start. I am sure Ms. Cocco would appreciate a call at 203-397-4830 x3304 if you would like to participate in the program next year.
