On the evening of July 22, 2024, I had the privilege of attending the Veterans Award Ceremony at High Plains Community Center. This event honored our neighbors and friends who served during the Korean and Vietnam War eras. Accompanying my husband, a Vietnam-era Air Force Captain, I was thrilled to see so many familiar faces in the packed room.

The ceremony exceeded our expectations in every way. I want to express my sincere gratitude to all those involved, starting with the legislators and administrators who brought this tribute to life. Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz, Veterans Affairs Commissioner Ronald Welch, First Selectman Jim Zeoli, Representatives Mary Welander and Kathy Kennedy, and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro’s representative, your dedication and time were invaluable. Thank you also to Sara Vincent for the beautiful National Anthem, Bear Gagnon for leading the Pledge of Allegiance, and the American Legion Post 127 for the "posting of the colors."

A unique and heartwarming aspect of the ceremony was the opportunity for veterans to share their experiences. Lieutenant Governor Bysiewicz skillfully guided this portion, ensuring everyone who wished to speak had a chance. I learned so much from these brief yet impactful stories.

One veteran, Mr. Clark, particularly resonated with me. He described his service during the "Cold War" from 1963 to 1965. I believe he felt his contributions were overlooked compared to those who served in active war zones. As someone who grew up during that era, I can assure him that his service was far from forgotten. The constant fear of a potential attack, the air raid drills, and the prevalent sense of uncertainty were a part of our lives. Veterans like Mr. Clark protected us, and we are eternally grateful.

The evening concluded with a touching presentation of personalized certificates, pins, and a group photo opportunity for all veterans.

I would like to offer a special thank you to Bear Gagnon and his family. Witnessing his involvement in this ceremony and his dedication to others filled me with hope for the future. You should all be incredibly proud of him.

To all veterans, whether present at the ceremony or not, and to those from every era, thank you for your service.
