The Bookcase: Evening Discussion

Thursday, September 12, 7 p.m.

This program is via Zoom. Attend from anywhere!  Join Bookcase leader Toby Zabinsky for a discussion of We Begin at the End by Chris Whittaker.

Duchess Day Radley is a thirteen-year-old self-proclaimed outlaw.  Rules are for other people.  She is the fierce protector of her five-year-old brother, Robin, and the parent to her mother, Star, a single mom incapable of taking care of herself, let alone her two kids.  Walk has never left the coastal California town where he and Star grew up.  He may have become the chief of police, but he’s still trying to heal the old wound of having given the testimony that sent his best friend, Vincent King, to prison decades before.  And he’s in overdrive protecting Duchess and her brother.  Now, thirty years later, Vincent is being released.  And Duchess and Walk must face the trouble that comes with his return.  We Begin at the End is an extraordinary novel about two kinds of families―the ones we are born into and the ones we create.  Registration is required to attend.  You can sign up here!

Ban This Book Club: Oryx and Crake

Monday, October 7 at 7 p.m.

Join librarian Rebecca Harlow as we discuss Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood as a work of literature and an object of censorship.  This book has been banned or challenged in 6 states.  In August 2024, it was one of 13 books banned statewide by Utah’s state board of education, allegedly for its “objective sensitive material.”  It was included in a BBC list of the 100 Most Inspiring Novels and The Guardian’s list of 100 Best Novels of the 21st century.  A novel of the future, Oryx & Crake “explores a world that has been devastated by ecological and scientific disasters.”  Copies of the book are available at the Circulation Desk.  Register here!
