Amity Welcomes Homegrown Leader as Assistant Superintendent
The Amity Regional School District is honored to announce the appointment of Dr. Shannan Carlson as Assistant Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Carlson brings over 25 years of experience as an educator and instructional leader, with expertise spanning Pre-K through high school.
Dr. Carlson’s educational leadership journey began in the Milford Public Schools, where she taught middle and high school social studies, serving as a team leader and advisory coordinator. She transitioned to administrative roles as Assistant Principal of Harborside Middle School and subsequently as Supervisor of District Improvement. In these roles, Dr. Carlson developed innovative programs such as Milford’s New Teacher Academy, oversaw the Teacher Education and Mentoring (TEAM) Program, and led districtwide professional development initiatives. Since 2017, she has served as Principal of East Shore Middle School, where she fostered professional growth among staff, implemented high-quality instructional practices, and supported students’ academic and social-emotional success.
A proud Amity Regional High School graduate, Dr. Carlson also has deep ties to the Amity community as the parent of two successful Amity alumni. She served six years on the Amity Board of Education, contributing as Chair of the Curriculum Committee and a member of the Personnel Committee.
Dr. Carlson’s educational credentials include a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Rhode Island, a Master of Arts in Teaching from Quinnipiac University, Sixth-Year Certificates in Educational Foundations and Administration from Southern Connecticut State University, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Sacred Heart University, where she also completed her Superintendent Certification. Her doctoral research focused on building community and strengthening students’ sense of belonging in schools, a testament to her commitment to holistic student development.
Known for her student-centered philosophy and dedication to fostering collaboration and connection, Dr. Carlson is well-prepared to support the district’s mission of academic excellence and creating a welcoming environment for all.
The Amity Regional School District warmly welcomes Dr. Carlson to her new role and looks forward to her contributions in guiding the district’s continued growth and success. Dr. Carlson will begin her tenure in Amity on February 1, 2025.
