The first grade students worked very hard on their first research project and presentation at Ms. McDonald’s first grade zoo at Turkey Hill School. Each student chose an animal that they were interested in to research. Over the course of a few weeks, the students read books, looked at pictures and compiled information in order to present a report on that particular animal. Some of topics covered were what the animal looks like, it’s parenting style, eating habits and where it lives. They had to draw a picture on each page of the animal doing that particular activity and then all the pages were compiled into a book which included a table of contents and the author’s biography. They also made a poster board with their favorite facts about the animal that they learned as well as more information and pictures. On the day of the zoo, the students dressed up as their chosen animal and had their face painted as well. Visitors walked around and stopped at each exhibit and the student read from their animal research report and answered any questions that they could. The students were so proud and excited about their projects and the zoo day. It was such a great introduction to first graders about how to do a research project and presentation. The students and visitors had a fabulous time and learned many new animal facts!
