Recently the Orange selectmen approved spending over $50,000 dollars to finish the new playing fields at Wolfe Park. I have followed this project since it was first presented to the Recreation Commission. Proposed by a youth league, it was clearly stated that there was to be no financial impact on the town. I am left with a few questions. Why would such a project be approved without funding in place? Did our elected leaders not see the potential financial liability on the town? I believe our veteran town leaders are experienced in how to spend funds without taxpayer input and approved this project knowing that the town would be forced to step in and pick up the cost. Our elected officials should be reminded that these types of back-room deals are not acceptable and if picking up the tab was not premeditated, I hope they learned to not accept anymore “favors”.
