Residents may be inconvenienced by street closings and detours around town throughout the summer, but according to Public Works Crew Chief Don Foyer, “there’s years of nice smooth roads ahead!”
Work began last week to repave the town’s main roads, starting with Old Tavern Road and moving on to Old Grassy Hill through the end of the month. Other roads scheduled for paving include Meetinghouse Lane, Mapledale, Dogwood, and New Haven Avenue.
The town’s road repair is part of a $5 million bond project approved several years ago. “We need another 5 million to keep going,” Foyer said. “A lot of roads in town are in rough shape. While we’ve kept up with many neighborhood streets, we haven’t paid much attention to the main roads.” The paving schedule is determined depending on a road’s conditions, with those in most need of repair moving to the top of the to-do list.
