Project Perseverance is underway at Turkey Hill School! A group of students from Student Council did an amazing job on Friday, February 1st presenting a student led, interactive kick off assembly to promote the importance of perseverance in life. Highlights from the assembly feature original videos designed by student council members to demonstrate the meaning of perseverance and examples of students at Turkey Hill School using strategies to persevere in math and gym. Student council members also created comics demonstrating various scenarios within and beyond school. As part of the assembly, students asked questions of their peers resulting in meaningful contributions of how to use strategies to persevere and succeed in the face of everyday challenges. Student council members also shared inspiring quotes of perseverance. For example, “You will only fail when you stop trying!” The assembly concluded with a three-minute sing along/dance party to the song “Don’t Give Up” by Shakira. Throughout the assembly, students embraced each others’ ideas and enjoyed moments of humor. Smiles permeated the gymnasium throughout the assembly.
This assembly is just the beginning of this school wide initiative to imbed “perseverance” (a habit of mind) within the students and community of Turkey Hill School. Bracelets were given to all students and community members at Turkey Hill School entitled Persevere-Don’t Give Up! Turkey Hill School 2019, as a reminder of our journey ahead. Posters featuring strategies to persevere have been mounted in classrooms and common areas of Turkey Hill School as a reminder of strategies to promote perseverance. The entire student body of Turkey Hill School will participate in a STEM project with staff from CT Stem Academy to engage in a design/engineering process while using strategies to persevere. Students will have individual charts to keep track of the strategies that they’re using. In addition, every teacher received a jar with marbles. Students have the opportunity to add marbles to the jars whenever they are using strategies to persevere throughout the day. Students are also encouraged to share their stories of perseverance on Turkey Hill School’s morning broadcast. A Chip’s Fundraiser is planned in March to raise money for materials and a school-wide event to celebrate the effort of students. In the words of Jose N. Harris, “We may not be there yet, but we are closer than we were yesterday.” Hats off to Turkey Hill School students and community as they embark on this exciting journey of success through perseverance!
