Orange Land Trust Annual Meeting: Our Weather, Becoming Milder but Wilder

The Orange Land Trust would like to invite you to our Annual Meeting, to be held Wednesday, May 4th, 2016, High Plains Community Center, 525 Orange Center Road at 7 pm. Following a short business meeting our guest speaker for the evening is Kevin Arnone, meteorologist with Channel 8, WTNH New Haven.

The presentation on Coastal Connecticut’s Weather, will provide an interesting and informative look at just what makes our weather, why is it so “changeable”, and what factors influence our day-to-day, seasonal, and even year-to-year weather experience. A good, yet puzzling, example is contrasting the winter of 2015, with its’ prolonged, bitter cold and significant snowstorm after snowstorm, with this past winter’s relatively mild temps and just a few, more typical, snow storms. Neither of which (thankfully) had the usual “Southern Connecticut” snow – changing to sleet, then freezing rain, then, freezing everything solid!

Do you remember a few years back, day after day, we seemed to have torrential rain from late winter through July and August? Yet the past two summers were so dry that the ponds and brooks nearly disappeared and lawn mowing dwindled to just a few times during the season.

Kevin also plans to bring a portable Weather Lab to help demonstrate the methods of gathering, measuring and quantifying current weather conditions, such as wind, moisture, temperature, pressure and observing the change in those characteristics, to shape a forecast.

We are forecasting a fun, informative and educational evening for all. Please plan to join us. This program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
