Obituary: Kathryn Jean Bonyai

Kathryn Jean Bonyai, 93, passed away at Carriage Green, Milford, on Wednesday, November 30, 2016, in the care of her family and Caring Hospice Services.

Jean was born in South Hero, Vermont on May 5, 1923, daughter of the late Clarence and Alice Cootware.  She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from St. Francis College, Hartford, CT.  She also attended Catholic University in Washington, D.C.  Jean became an Army nurse and was stationed in Framingham, MA and Fort Bragg , North Carolina.  After the war, she worked for the Visiting Nurse Association in New Britain, CT.

On November 30, 1946, she married William J. Bonyai, an attorney and Judge of Probate.  He died April 19, 1969.

Jean worked as a supervisor of public health nurses for the Milford Health Department.  After her retirement from the City of Milford, she worked at Yale University working on aging and geriatric studies.  She was an active volunteer for Catholic Charities and the Milford Historical Society.  She was a member of the Carriage Green community serving on the welcoming committee, acting as a liaison between residents and administrators, and working in the community store.  Jean enjoyed spending time with people especially her family and friends.

Jean is survived by her five daughters:  Mary Ann McGaughey and husband, William McGaughey; Kathy Bonyai and husband, Larry Shaper; Susan Remington and husband, Harold Remington; Eileen Bonyai; Linda Newell and husband, Harry Newell; daughter-in-law, Donna Bonyai; grandchildren Jennifer, Sean, Justin, Dara, Kate, Hannah, Hal, Cody, Allyson, Jillyan and Harry and great grandchildren Liam, Finnegan and Claire. Jean was predeceased by her husband, William J. Bonyai, and her son, William J. Bonyai, Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, Gulf St., Milford on Saturday, December 3rd.  Internment followed at the Milford Cemetery with full Military Honors.
