Obituary: Emma Hofmiller Graves

Emma Hofmiller Graves, 98, of Madison, formerly of Orange for over 60 years died on July 10, 2016. She was born in Framingham MA on April 27, 1918 to the late Angelo and Fiorina Incagnoli Tordiglioni. Emma was predeceased by her late husbands, Otto Hofmiller and Charles Graves. She was the mother to Robert Hofmiller (Rosemary) of Guilford, and the late Richard Hofmiller (Brenda) of Orange and the late Judith Hofmiller of Brookfield. Step-mother to Patricia Nizen of New Haven, Kathleen Graves and the late Charles Graves Jr.; grandmother to David Cannella of Clinton, Jacqueline Hofmiller Ciocca (Stephen) of Madison, Lindsay Hofmiller of Hartford, and great-grandmother to Luke, John and Peter all of Madison. Also, step-grandmother to Nicole Nizen Kollman (Michael) of Vermont, Stephen Nizen (Kathleen) of Durham and Jay DeKoeyer (Beth) of Durham.

She was also survived by her beloved nieces Joanne Sullivan, Andrea Popoli and Maryann Popoli, all of Cape Cod, MA, and a large extended family in Italy. She was predeceased by her sister Carmela Popoli, also of Cape Cod.

She grew up in Everett, MA and worked as a bookkeeper for Joseph’s Restaurant in Boston prior to her marriage to her beloved husband Otto Hofmiller and then moving to Orange, CT. She enjoyed a full, cultured and feisty life for 98 years. Despite developing macular degeneration in her mid 50s, it did not stop her from enjoying the opera, musicals, reading, swimming, gardening, traveling the world and anything that kept her active and busy. She was a caregiver and nanny to many families throughout the area. Early in her marriage she lost her husband Otto to an untimely death and was then blessed to meet and marry Charles Graves, then raising his three children…a real life “Brady Bunch” complete with all the family antics of six active children. She will be missed by her family and friends.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. George Church, 33 Whitfield Street, Guilford on August 24, 2016 at 10 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Mercy School, 149 Neck Road, Madison, CT. 06443. Arrangements are in care of Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church Street, Guilford.
