Mount Ida junior outside hitter, Brett Southworth, was named as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Men’s Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week on February 5th for his efforts in a trio of Mustang victories over the weekend. A native of Orange, Conn. and a graduate of Amity Regional High School, Southworth registered 31 kills (3.44 per set), 22 digs (2.22 per set) and six service aces on the week, including a double-double performance of 17 kills, 12 digs and three service aces in a 3-1 triumph at Dean on February 4th.
Brett, who posted a .313 attack percentage in the three outings, added eight kills, seven digs and two service aces in a home sweep of Southern Vermont on Friday evening while recording six kills and three digs in a 3-0 victory over Pratt Institute as part of Sunday’s tri-match action at Dean. Southworth leads Mount Ida in kills (47) and ranks second in digs (34) in the early going, as he has accounted for 56 points through five matches to date.
Head Coach Craig Martin’s Mustangs, who stand at 3-2 overall, hit the road for four contests the week of February 5 beginning on Thursday evening when Mount Ida ventures to Chestnut Hill, Mass. to square off with Pine Manor in a non-league match at 7:00 p.m. EST.
