JCL Event Honors Volunteer Children’s Literacy Advocates
The Jewish Coalition for Literacy (JCL), an award-winning program of the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven, will hold its Volunteer Reading Partner Appreciation Event, Wednesday, May 17, at 9:30 a.m. at Congregation Mishkan Israel in Hamden. Deborah Freedman, children’s book author, architect, artist and illustrator will be introduced by JCL’s team leader and reading partner, Hedda Kopf. Deborah Freedman majored in art history at Yale University and architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design. This event is open to all interested community members that enjoy reading with children, without charge. Freedman’s dynamic program will showcase her books and how to make the most of them when reading with students.
With about 175 JCL reading partners, volunteering in seven New Haven Public Schools, JCL’s diverse group spans different faiths, educational backgrounds and experiences. Each volunteer commits one hour a week to read one-on-one with assigned students, sharing the pleasures of reading, learning and conversation, and giving the child the opportunity to express themselves to an interested adult. Volunteers and students enjoy reading and conversation with each other to form nurturing relationships.
Educators from JCL’s seven partner New Haven Public Schools and other local children’s literacy advocates are invited to attend the event to honor JCL reading partners for donating their precious time and for sharing their love of reading and learning with students.
