Thanks to the sponsorship by the Jamie A. Hulley Arts Foundation, and the generous donations from the Turkey Hill School PTO and the Father’s Club, every student at Turkey Hill School participated in a collaborative art project to create a mural that depicts the unique characteristics of all students and the values upheld in the community.
A committee including representation from multiple stakeholders was developed to design an art project which would connect with the PBIS core values of respecting individuality and promoting a respectful, safe and responsible learning environment in which all students achieve high standards.
Students participated in several presentations with artist, Steve DiGiovanni to explore color variation and emotions. In addition, they were instructed in color mixing techniques. Every student participated in a series of four project sessions in which every child designed, fine-tuned and ultimately created a tile with their own unique color. Students had the opportunity to work alongside various grade level classmates cooperatively. Two hundred ninety- four tiles are in the process of being mounted onto a mural which will represent the students and the community efforts of Turkey Hill School members. The mural is expected to be mounted before the year end.
The grant from the Jamie A. Hulley Arts Foundation, and the Turkey Hill School PTO and the Fathers Club provided the means to implement the project successfully. The expertise of artist, Steve Di Giovanni, and the teachers’ and parents’ support throughout the project sessions were invaluable. The collective efficacy involved in this project is just another example of the partnership that exists within the culture of Turkey Hill School. Together, the members of the community continue to enhance learning for every child.
