On Sunday, April 22 at 10 am, Congregation B’nai Jacob in Woodbridge will present Dr. Barry Holtz, in a lecture entitled, “Who was Rabbi Akiva and Why Should He Matter to Jews Today?” Dr. Holtz will discuss his acclaimed new biography of Rabbi Akiva—Rabbi Akiva: Sage of the Talmud (Yale University Press, 2017). How did Rabbi Akiva transform from an impoverished, unschooled man of 40 into a beloved, influential Talmudic scholar and quite possibly, “the greatest rabbi of them all?” In this lecture, Dr. Holtz will explore what is entailed in writing a biography of a figure from the distant past and how the stories of Akiva’s life speaks to us today. Books will be available for purchase and signing following the program.
Barry W. Holtz is the Theodore and Florence Baumritter Professor of Jewish Education at The Jewish Theological Seminary. He served as Dean of the Seminary from 2008 to 2013. His five previous books include Back to the Sources: Reading the Classic Jewish Texts and Textual Knowledge: Teaching the Bible in Theory and in Practice, which received the National Jewish Book Award for education.
