The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd welcomes the public to our calendar of fun and spiritually enriching events for this month.
Sunday, May 15th, The Church of the Good Shepherd will celebrate the Day of Pentecost. This is the day when scripture tells us that the flame of the Holy Spirit was poured out upon the followers of Christ enabling them to speak in the languages of the nations of the earth—men and women, young and old, slave and free, all equal before God and worthy of God’s saving grace. Members of the congregation will speak the Easter acclamation in many languages, and all are encouraged to wear red, signifying the fire of the Holy Spirit. Please join us for this celebration of God’s power, love, and grace!
Our popular Prayer Shawl Ministry is open to the public and meets on Sunday, May 15th at 11:30 am in the Parish Hall. Anyone interested in knitting or crocheting a prayer shawl for a person in need is welcome to join us. We craft all year-round and meet regularly. Our prayer shawls are blessed during a Sunday Eucharist and then distributed by our parishioners to friends, neighbors and family members in need and at area hospitals.
Imam Omer Bajwa, Coordinator of Muslim Life at Yale University, will be our guest speaker on Thursday evening, May 19th at 7pm in the Parish Hall. His topic will be “Inner and Outer Dimensions of Fasting Ramadan in Islam.” The talk will present an overview of Ramadan (which begins June 6th) and how it is observed by Muslims around the world. This multi-media presentation explores fasting as an ancient spiritual practice, across religious traditions, and how fasting has relevant and contemporary lessons for everyone. The talk is free and open to the public.
The Shepherd’s Table, our free lunch and fellowship program, will be going on hiatus for the summer. The last luncheon will be Wednesday, May 25th. During the summer months recreational bingo fun will continue on Wednesday mornings in the Parish Hall from 10:30am to Noon. We look forward to seeing our Wednesday regulars this summer as well as newcomers.
On Youth Sunday, June 5th, our 9:30 service will be led by the young people of the congregation filling the roles of readers, preachers, and Eucharistic assistants. Please join us as we mark God’s promise of renewal and hope through the ministry of our young people and the celebration of our new confirmands. All are welcome at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd.
