YOU can help children in our local elementary schools succeed by volunteering just one hour per week. The Jewish Coalition for Literacy (JCL), a nondenominational/nonsectarian program, recruits volunteer reading partners to share the pleasures of reading and conversation, one to one with a child, who can benefit from the attention of a caring adult. For an investment of just one hour a week, JCL volunteers help young students improve their reading skills and experience the joy of learning. In return, volunteers experience the thrill of helping students love to learn.
JCL invites you to enjoy a unique, custom-built volunteer opportunity to help our community (and from all accounts, the experience has a tremendously positive impact on the volunteers themselves!). You, the reading partner, choose the day, time, specific school and grade of the student that works best for you ̶ just one hour of your time each week to literally help transform the life of a child. Talking and reading together, the volunteer shares the pleasures of reading and conversation, helping the child to become a confident reader and a better communicator. Can you think of a better way to use an hour?
Attend JCL’s Information and Orientation: Thursday, September 17th, 9:30 AM at the JCC in Woodbridge. All our welcome. No previous experience needed. Contact Brenda Brenner at firstname.lastname@example.org or 203 387-2424 x 308 for further information.
JCL, a proud recipient of a 2015 TAPS award from the New Haven Public Schools, and the 2007 Superintendent’s Award, granted by the New Haven Network for Public Education, is a project of the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven. JCL continues to be included on each partner school’s improvement plan.
