In recognition of Veterans Day, 8th graders from Amity Middle School in Orange visited the West Haven Veterans Museum and Learning Center. Students were led on engaging tours of the museum’s collection by volunteer veterans that explained how the museum is organized as a timeline of U.S. military history. Highlights of the tour included replica uniforms from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, the role of women in World War II, and tribute displays dedicated to local recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor. Students participated in a “scavenger hunt” for historical information which was created by their teachers. By attending the museum students gained a deeper appreciation of the service of our veterans. Their sacrifices are directly linked to the freedoms that we enjoy today. Follow-up activities continued in the social studies classrooms.
